India and the Republic of Lithuania today agreed to work in the areas of deep tech Start-Ups and also forge lasting ties in manufacturing of semiconductor chips.

A High-level Lithuanian Delegation met with Dr Jitendra Singh and discussed ways and means to revive the 2010 Agreement in the area of Science and Technology.

Responding to the keen interest of Dr Jitendra Singh to give a further fillip to Start-Up culture to create more job opportunities and wealth creation, Vice-Minister of the Economy and Innovation, Karolis Žemaitis assured the Indian Minister that Lithuania has robust know-how and capacities in life sciences, biotechnology and other STEM areas and keen to have cooperation between the two countries in high tech Start-Ups.

The Department of Science & Technology through MEA has been negotiating a Science & Technology Agreement with the Government of Lithuania since 2010.  In April 2010, a revised Indian counter draft incorporating few minor modifications was formally submitted to the Lithuanian side. Formal response of the Lithuanian side is still awaited.

27-Apr-2022: Cabinet approves opening of Indian Mission in Lithuania

The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has accorded approval to the opening of a new Indian Mission in Lithuania in 2022.

Opening of Indian Mission in Lithuania will help expand India’s diplomatic footprint, deepen political relations and strategic cooperation, enable growth of bilateral trade, investment and economic engagements, facilitate stronger people-to-people contacts, allow for more sustained political outreach in multilateral fora and help garner support for India’s foreign policy objectives. Indian Mission in Lithuania will also better assist the Indian community and protect their interests.

The decision to open a new Indian Mission in Lithuania is a forward-looking step in pursuit of our national priority of growth and development or ‘Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas’. Enhancement of India’s diplomatic presence will, inter-alia, provide market access for Indian companies and bolster Indian exports of goods and services. This would have a direct impact in augmenting domestic production and employment in line with our goal of a self-reliant India or ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’.

4-Oct-2017: Cabinet approves Extradition Treaty between India and Lithuania.

The Union Cabinet has given its approval for the signing and ratification of the Extradition Treaty between India and Lithuania.

The Treaty would provide a legal framework for seeking extradition of terrorists, economic offenders and other criminals from and to Lithuania.

The Treaty would help in extradition of fugitive criminals including terrorists for criminal prosecutions from Lithuania who may have committed crimes against India. It will bring the criminals to justice, with a view to ensure peace and tranquility to public at large.
