6-Jul-2023: World Food India-2023: Roundtable interaction co-chaired by Secretary, DPIIT, and Secretary, MoFPI with agri-food processing companies in New Delhi

With regard to the upcoming World Food India-2023, an investor roundtable interaction was co-chaired by the Secretary, Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), and the Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries with agri-food processing companies in New Delhi, yesterday. The roundtable witnessed participation from the leading global and Indian food processing companies. During the interaction, the future plans of the participating companies and their prospects of partnerships with MoFPI for the WFI-2023, being organized from 3-5 November, 2023 at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi, were discussed.

In his special address, Secretary, DPIIT emphasized on the importance of manufacturing sector in the growing Indian GDP. He also mentioned the favourable agro-climatic zones in India which are not just suitable for production of a wide variety of agri-commodities like cereals, pulses, fruits, vegetables etc., but also to process them in large quantities.

In her keynote address, Secretary, MoFPI mentioned about the growth and vast opportunities present in the food-processing sector. She added that the ministry is organizing the 2nd edition of the highly anticipated World Food India event, envisioning an even larger scale compared to the previous 2017 edition. The Secretary extended a heartfelt invitation to all companies to participate in the event with great enthusiasm.

During the roundtable, the participating companies expressed their optimistic outlook on the Indian market and lauded the various initiatives taken by the Government of India to improve the business environment, including the favourable policies such as the Production Linked Incentive Scheme and the flagship Pradhan Mantri Kisan Sampada Yojana initiated by MoFPI. The companies also expressed their interest in participating in World Food India-2023 and affirmed their willingness to sponsor the event and showcase their products and technologies through dedicated stall spaces. Many companies also showed keen interest on partnering with MoFPI for the sessions that are being planned as part of the event.

In his closing remarks, Additional Secretary, MoFPI mentioned that the Investment Facilitation Cell (Invest India) and event partner FICCI will stay in touch with the companies to firm up the participation details. EY is roped in as the knowledge partner for the event.

18-May-2023: First Inter-Ministerial Committee Meeting held on World Food India 2023

Secretary, Food Processing Industries (FPI) Smt. Anita Praveen, chaired the First Inter- Ministerial Committee Meeting with senior representatives from Ministries/Departments/Boards on Tuesday 16th May 2023 in New Delhi. The agenda of the committee meeting was to apprise the officials of preparation made so far for World Food India 2023 and discuss participation of respective Ministries/Departments/Organizations in the event. This was in continuation to series of interactions held to apprise the Ministry’s plan of action for the upcoming World Food India 2023 and discuss potential areas of collaboration. The roundtable witnessed participation from the senior officials of key central government ministries and departments.

During her address, Secretary, FPI requested the officials to share specific plan of action regarding their participation/partnership in the Mega Food Event that is being organized between 3rd and 5th November 2023 in New Delhi.

All central ministries and departments were requested to share suggestions on the planned sessions of World Food India and participate in the event actively as well as support the Ministry in awareness creation on the relevant Department’s social media handles, embark participation of senior policy makers, industry members, SHGs and all relevant stakeholders to make the event a grand success.

Further, the participating officials assured support to Ministry of Food Processing Industries

(MoFPI) through technical/sectoral sessions, investment-oriented sessions with Ambassadors and High Commissioners, buyer seller meets/RBSMs, engagements with startups/IPRs/ONDC, promotion of Ayush Aahar products and GI products. Some of the suggestions / feedback given by the officials included ensuring participation from exporters associated with the respective boards.

Secretary FPI concluded her remarks by urging all stakeholders to join hands in making the event a success by leveraging their respective strengths and extending additional support. The next meeting of the Inter-Ministerial Committee is expected to be held in June 2023 to firm up concrete partnership/participation of different stakeholders.

Further, the Investment Facilitation Cell (Invest India) and the event partner (FICCI) were directed to coordinate with the respective ministries and departments for facilitating the discussed action plan and seek necessary support from government bodies.

17-Jun-2019: World Food India to be held from 1st to 4th November 2019 in New Delhi

Union Minister for Food Processing Industries Smt. Harsimrat Kaur Badal has said that World Food India 2019 will be the biggest gathering of all global and domestic stakeholders in Food Processing Sector. WFI 2019 will be held from 1-4th November 2019 in New Delhi and will position India as Food Processing Destination of the World.

The Minister chaired a meeting with various stakeholders of WFI 2019 including the associated Ministries and Departments, CEOs of major food processing companies and Industry Associations. This was followed by a second meeting with the Ambassadors/High Commissioners of leading food processing/food retailing countries. The meetings were held to discuss the investment opportunities available in India in the Food Processing Sector and to sensitize the gathering about their participation in WFI 2019.

The Minister informed the gathering that the second edition of World Food India is planned at a much bigger and grandeur level from 1-4 November 2019 at Vigyan Bhawan and Rajpath Lawns in New Delhi. World Food India 2019 shall consist of several top level seminars, investment opportunities, exhibitions, high level CEO roundtables, country sessions, B2B and B2G networking etc. For the year 2019, the Ministry is targeting to partner with at least 15 countries and participation from at least 80 countries. The tagline of the event will be “Forging Partnerships for Growth”.

Smt Badal informed that preparations for the World Food India 2019 have already begun. More than 11 international & 8 domestic roadshows are planned. The roundtable with all top CEOs and ambassadors was one such high level event showcasing the intent of ministry to engage with Industry- domestic and global. In the next few months, Ministry will reach out to all the states and other players in Industry in particularly the MSMEs. The Minister also invited suggestions from the industry on the 4-day event.

The event has already received interests from several countries and industries interested to becoming part of the event. The minister invited the ambassadors and industries to be a part of this mega celebration of food and witness the immense opportunity that India provides for growth and prosperity.

Food processing is one of the six superstar sectors under the Government of India’s Make in India initiative and has the potential to transform India as a leading food processing destination of the World. Food processing is critical to achieving the Prime Minister’s vision of doubling the farmers’ income in India and reducing food wastage and that the Ministry is making several efforts to ensure that this vision is realized.

Indian Food Processing Industry has grown tremendously recording 11% growth rate, which is twice the pace of Global Industry. The sector has recorded double digit growth rate across all major sub-segments of the sectors both in terms of value and volume.

Despite huge domestic market of 1.3 billion customers with the youngest population globally and an abundant agricultural base, the processing levels in India remain low at 7.7% behind several economies such as China, Malaysia and US. India’s share in global exports of processed food is only 2%. Besides, India also has a high share of harvest and post-harvest losses from major agricultural produces on account of poor storage, transportation and logistics to the extent of INR 92,651 Crores ($13 Billion)-3 times the agricultural budget.

Background: The government initiated a biennial event- World Food India to promote food processing sector at global level. The first such event was conducted in 2017 and received wide success. The event created Brand India in global food map by positioning India as a World Food Factory. It was for the first time in India that all major policy makers and top industrialists across the globe in Food Processing Industries were together under one roof. World Food India 2017 had witnessed presence of India’s top political leadership including the President of India, the Prime Minister, the Finance and Commerce & Industry Minister. CEOs roundtables with Prime Minister, Finance Minister, and Commerce & Industry Minister were the key highlight covering various aspect related to business be it strategic, finance/investment or trade.

World Food India 2017 witnessed the participation of 61 countries, ministers from several countries and India, Chief Ministers of various Indian states, 60 Global CEOs and eminent academicians attended the event. The event saw a footfall of more than 75,000 more than 8,000 B2B meetings and signing of MoUs worth USD 14 Billion.

3-Nov-2017: World Food India 2017 held in New Delhi.

Ministry organised World Food India 2017 from November 3-5th in Delhi to showcase investment potential of India in the Food Processing Sector. The three day event inaugurated by Prime Minister exhibited opportunities in the Indian Food Processing Sector to foster maximum investment commitments.

The event provided a platform for exhibiting innovative products and manufacturing processes showcasing the entire value chain of food processing industry with a vision to leverage innovation, technology, development & sustainability in the backdrop of achieving food security. 61 Countries and Global CEOs participated in the Fair along with 800 global & Domestic exhibitors from 27 States.

The exhibition saw footfall from 75000 business visitors. Germany, Japan and Denmark were Partner Countries to World Food India whereas Italy & Netherlands were Focus Countries. The President of India at the Valedictory function of World Food India 2017 aptly termed it the “the Kumbh Mela of Indian Food”

2-Nov-2017: PM to inaugurate World Food India 2017

The Prime Minister will inaugurate World Food India 2017 on 3rd November 2017 from Vigyan Bhavan New Delhi. WFI is the most anticipated international mega food event, as India welcomes to host biggest ever congregation of global investors and business leaders of major food companies from 3-5 November in New Delhi. Organized by Ministry of Food Processing Industries, World Food India aims to transform Food Economy and realize the vision of doubling of famers’ income by establishing India as a preferred investment destination and sourcing hub for the global food processing industry. This is the first time that India is hosting such an event for the Food processing sector. World Food India platform will strengthen India’s position as a Global Food Factory and is a positive step towards making the Country Food Secure.

India is expected to attract an investment of US$ 10 billion in food processing sector and generate 1 million jobs in the next 3 years. World Food India 2017 gears up to host over 2,000 participants, over 200 companies from 30 countries, 18 ministerial and business delegations, nearly 50 global CEOs along with CEOs of all leading domestic food processing companies, and representatives of 28 States in India. Germany, Japan and Denmark are Partner Countries to World Food India. Italy & Netherlands are the Focus Countries.

International Ministerial & business delegations with 200+ members from 15 countries will take part in B2B/B2G meetings. The mega event would also host 8 sectoral conferences, 2 plenary sessions on “India the preferred destination” with the Finance Minister of India as the Guest of Honour and one on “One Nation, one food law- an enabling regulatory environment for investment in the food sector” in association with the Food Standards and Safety Authority of India. In addition, there are 20 State sessions and 6 country sessions. 7 sectoral publications would be released at the event.

A massive exhibition spread over 40,000 sq. metres in the verdant C- Hexagon lawns of India Gate is expected to attract significant footfalls.
