14-Dec-2017: INS Kalvari, India’s first Scorpene submarine, commissioned

Prime Minister commissioned India’s first Scorpene submarine, the INS Kalvari, in Mumbai. A Scorpene submarine is a class of diesel-electric attack submarines designed by French naval defence and energy company DCNS and are being manufactured by Mazgaon Dock Ltd in Mumbai.

The submarine can undertake multiple missions, including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, intelligence gathering, mine laying and area surveillance.

The submarine is designed to ensure interoperability in the Navy, said Mazgaon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd (MDL), which built the submarine.

The submarine is fitted out with state-of-the-art technology including superior stealth features such as advanced acoustic silencing techniques, low radiated noise levels, hydro-dynamically optimized shape and the ability to launch a crippling attack on the enemy using precision guided weapons, according to a statement by MDL.

Attacks can be launched with both torpedoes and tube-launched anti-ship missiles, while underwater or on surface. The stealth of this potent platform is enhanced by the special attention given to various signatures. These stealth features give it invulnerability, unmatched by most submarines.

MDL is also building six Scorpene class submarines with Technology Transfer from Naval Group (formerly known as DCNS) of France. The second of the Scorpenes under construction at MDL, Khanderi, was launched in January 2017, and is currently undergoing sea trials. The third, Karanj, is being readied for launch shortly. The remaining three submarines are in various stages of outfitting. The project is expected to be completed by 2020.

Kalvari is named after the feared tiger shark, a deadly deep sea predator of the Indian Ocean.

31-May-2017: First Scorpene submarine Kalvari to be commissioned by July

The first of the six Scorpene submarines 'Kalvari', being built in India under technology transfer is likely to join the Navy by end of July. Kalvari is going through its final phase of trials.

Kalvari is named after a deep-sea tiger shark. The Scorpene is part of the ambitious Project 75 of Indian Navy’s submarine programme. This type of submarine is designed to operate in all theatres including the Tropics. It can undertake various types of missions that are undertaken by any modern submarine including anti-surface warfare, anti-submarine warfare, mine laying, intelligence gathering, surveillance, etc.

With its superior stealth capability, it can launch a crippling attack on the enemy using precision guided weapons. The attack can be launched with torpedoes, as well as tube launched anti-ship missiles, whilst underwater or on surface.

Six Scorpene submarines are being built under Project-75 by Mazagaon Docks Limited (MDL) with technology transfer from France. All the six submarines under this projects will be indigenously built at Mumbai’s Mazagaon Dockyard Ltd. These attack submarines have diesel propulsion and an additional air-independent propulsion.
