15-Mar-2023: The Green National Highway Corridor Project to be implemented in four states with financial assistance of World Bank

The Government of India and the World Bank have signed an agreement for the construction of Green National Highway Corridors Project (GNHCP) in an aggregate length of 781 km in the states of Himachal Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh, with loan assistance of US $ 500 million against total project cost of US $ 1288.24 million (Rs. 7,662.47 crore). The objective of the GNHCP is to demonstrate safe and green highway keeping in view climate resilience and use of green technologies by incorporating the provisions of conservation of natural resources using cement treated sub base/reclaimed asphalt pavement, use of local/ marginal material such as lime, fly ash, waste plastic, bio-engineering measures for slope protection such as hydroseeding, coco/jute fibre etc., which will enhance the ability of Ministry to bring Green technologies into the mainstream.

6-Apr-2022: Status of Green Highways in the Country

Total 22 Greenfield highways (5 Expressways comprising length of 2,485 km with cost of Rs. 1,63,350 crore & 17 Access Controlled Highways comprising length of 5,816 km with cost of Rs. 1,92,876 crore) have been envisaged for development.  Three sections of the Delhi Mumbai Expressway i.e. Delhi – Dausa - Lalsot (Jaipur) (214 km), Vadodara – Ankelshwar (100 km) and Kota – Ratlam Jhabua (245 km) are planned for completion by March, 23.

Out of 8,301 km length, 4,946 km is in different stages such as awarded (Appointed date not declared), bidding stage and DPR stage.

Blackspots are identified for undertaking immediate short term measures for mitigation and long term measures for permanent rectification. As per information available with the Ministry, short term measures have been taken on almost all Black spots and long term measures have been taken on 3385 Black spots up to February, 2022. Ministry has taken following steps to rectify all Black spots through its implementing agencies i.e. NHAI, NHIDCL and NH wings of State PWDs:-

  1. To carry out all stage (Design, construction, and operation) road safety audits for all National Highways;
  2. Provision of Rumble strips or bar markings at the approaches of junctions on NHs;
  3. Provision of Speed Limit signs at desired locations of NHs network;
  4. Provision of Speed breakers and associated signage on side roads;
  5. Provision of amber beacons for traffic approaching a junction as per IRC;
  6. Installation of Crash barriers on High embankments and in hilly terrain;
  7. Encouraging engineers for certificate course in road safety audit for which MOUs are signed   with   IITs   and   other    leading    technical    education/ research  institutions;
  8. Developed a Black spot MIS portal where details of all blackspots, ids, photographs, and rectification status and post rectification feedback shall be collected and monitored.

2021

19-Jul-2021: Status of Green National Highway Corridor Project

The Government had signed loan agreement with the World Bank to develop Green National Highway Corridors (GNHCP). The project include Upgradation of about 781 km length of various National Highways passing through the states of Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. Out of total length of 781 km, work on 287.96 km having Civil Cost of Rs. 1664.44 cr. has been awarded. The schedule date of completion is December, 2025.
