Economic Census is the complete count of all non-farm economic establishments located within the geographical boundary of the country. As per 6th Economic Census results, a total of 5,84,95,359 economic establishments were listed in the country.

Economic Census data have been widely disseminated to several government and non-government agencies for their research, analysis, policy formulations, etc. Usage of EC data by these user agencies is expected to facilitate in designing developmental policies for economic growth, employment generation, etc. in the country.

2019

15-May-2019: 7th Edition of Economic Census

In the run up to upcoming 7th Edition of Economic Census, a National Training Workshop of the enumerators was organized by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI) in New Delhi.

Economic Census (EC) is the complete count of all establishments/units located within the geographical boundaries of the country. Agriculture is not covered in Economic census (agricultural crops and plantations are not counted as establishments for the purpose of this Economic Census). The establishment is a unit situated in a single location in which predominantly one kind of economic activity is carried out such that at least a part of the goods and/or services produced by the unit goes for sale (i.e. entire produce is not for sole consumption).

7th Economic Census -2019 is being conducted by the Ministry of Statistics and Program Implementation (MoSPI). MoSPI has partnered with Common Service Centres, CSC e-Governance Services India Limited, a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) as the implementing agency for 7th EC.

The fieldwork for the 7th EC will commence in June 2019. The results of the exercise will be made available after verification and validation of the fieldwork.

Six Economic Censuses (EC) have been conducted till date: First EC (1977), Second EC (1980), Third EC (1990), Fourth EC (1998), Fifth EC (2005) and Sixth EC (2013).
