4-Jul-2017: Presidential assent for Kambala Bill

Kambala — the traditional slush-track buffalo race of the coastal districts — can be conducted, Since the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2017, finally gets Presidential assent.

The Legislative Assembly passed the Bill in February 2017 to put the traditional sport out of the ambit of PCA Act. Governor Vajubhai R. Vala then referred the Bill to the President for his assent.

7-Jun-2017: Centre clears kambala Bill

The Union Ministry of Law and Justice has cleared the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment) Bill 2017, legalising kambala — the traditional slush track buffalo race — and will send it to the President for his assent.

Following protests by people and kambala organisers in Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, the State government on February 13, 2017 passed the Bill to exempt kambala and bullock-cart racing from the ambit of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960.

13-Feb-2017: Karnataka Assembly passes Bill to allow Kambala

To conduct kambala, the traditional buffalo race, the Karnataka Legislative Assembly has passed the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Karnataka Amendment) Bill, 2017.

The Bill seeks to exempt kambala and bullock-cart racing from the ambit of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PCA) Act, 1960.

22-Jan-2017: Demand for lifting the ban on kambala(buffalo racing) gains momentum in coastal Karnataka.

After promulgation of Ordinance to lift ban on Jallikattu, Kambala Samiti has convened a meeting to discuss the course for Kambala.

The State government already informed High Court, during the hearing of a PIL petition filed by PETA, that it had withdrawn the permission given to hold kambala based on the Supreme Court’s order on Jallikattu. The hearing on the petition is scheduled for January 30.

According to supporters, Traditional kambala is 1,000 years old and it could be saved as its ban was a fallout of the ban on Jallikattu.

12-Jan-2017: World’s first gender literature festival to be held in Patna.

The world’s first “Gender Literature Festival” will be held in Patna, Bihar in the second week of April 2017.

The Gender Resource Centre of Bihar’s Women Development Corporation (WDC) will be organizing the festival. The purpose of this initiative is to create a platform, to exchange ideas, and to share and learn experiences of renowned people in the field of gender-based or focused literature. The festival will also act as a platform to increase visibility for gender equity and advocacy in the State of Bihar.
