26-Jan-2019: President confers Ashoka Chakra on Lance Naik Nazir Wani

Lance Naik Nazir Ahmad Wani, a militant-turned-soldier who laid down his life fighting a group of terrorists in Shopian in Kashmir in November, was awarded the Ashoka Chakra by President Ram Nath Kovind.

Lance Naik Wani joined the Army's 162 Infantry Battalion (Territorial Army) Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry in 2004. Wani was a recipient of the Sena Medal for gallantry twice in 2007 and 2018.

26-Jan-2018: President Confers Ashok Chakra on Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala

Corporal Jyoti Prakash Nirala was a member of the Garud Commando Force. He was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra, India's highest peacetime military decoration in January 2018.

He is the first airman to receive the award for ground combat and only the third one to receive it overall after Suhas Biswas and Rakesh Sharma.

26-Jan-2017: Ashok Chakra for Hangpan Dada

Havildar Hangpan Dada was posthumously awarded with Ashok Chakra, the highest peacetime gallantry award of India. He laid down his life after single-handedly killing three terrorists in Jammu and Kashmir last year.
